THE STORY
An informant from Veracruz, Mexico, recalled being told by his parents to carry a garlic clove in his pocket when attending parties or other crowded gatherings. His mother described it as protection against mal ojo, the evil eye. In her explanation, a clove that had dried and shriveled on returning home showed that it had protected its carrier.1
Randy Esparza published the recollection in the University of Southern California's Digital Folklore Archives. The informant is not named in the entry.1
The account identifies the informant's connection to Veracruz. The archive post is dated May 14, 2023; the precise interview location and collection date are not supplied.1
