Abstract-based reading · consulted October 17, 2026. A selected teaching example, not a systematic review or dietary recommendation. Full-text methods, funding, registration and risk of bias have not been assessed.
- Study design
- Randomized, four-group parallel trial.
- Who took part
- 192 adults with LDL cholesterol of 130–190 mg/dL.
- Studied preparation
- Raw garlic, powdered supplement or aged extract; approximately a 4 g clove equivalent, six days weekly.
- Compared with
- Placebo.
- Time frame
- Six months; fasting lipids measured monthly.
- What was measured
- Blood LDL cholesterol and other lipid measures.
- Reported finding
- None of the three garlic preparations significantly changed LDL relative to placebo under these conditions.
- Uncertainty
- The abstract gives standard deviations for group changes, not confidence intervals for between-group differences. A nonsignificant result does not demonstrate exact equivalence.
- What this cannot tell us
- This is one trial in a defined population, not a verdict on every preparation or every health outcome.
What does “no significant difference” leave open?
Keep the comparator beside the finding. Then ask which additional information would help you judge the size and precision of any difference.

Who took part? What exactly was prepared, compared, and measured? Which result remains uncertain? Keep those answers beside any claim you save. These are editorial reading prompts, not findings from the paper.
