Read the ingredient line

Check whether a recipe asks for fresh, crumbled dried, or ground dried herbs. Nebraska Extension gives this approximate equivalence: one tablespoon of finely cut fresh herbs, one teaspoon of crumbled dried herbs, or one-quarter to one-half teaspoon of ground dried herbs.

Make the substitution visible

When substituting fresh and crumbled dried herbs, the extension guide uses a three-to-one ratio. For example, three tablespoons of fresh parsley correspond to one tablespoon of dried parsley. Treat the stated equivalent as approximate.

Leave a useful note

In the private note below, record the herb, its form, the amount used, and which recipe you followed. If you revisit the dish, those details make your own comparison easier. This is a prompt for your observations, rather than a report of a Herbologium kitchen trial.
